End of project Evaluation

For the task of creating a 30 second trailer for a James Bond film i chose to do Goldfinger. I decided on Golfinger because im not a massive James Bond fan but i had scene this particular film and it had the scenes that stood out most to me. The laser scene is quite an iconic scene and it also stars one of the most famous and popular Bond villains of all time, Oddjob. So to me, it made sense to do this film.

So to start with, i knew i wanted to do a gun barrel scene. The iconic intro sequence from any film. Once you see the inside of the gun barrel, you know its a James Bond film. This is why i chose to add a small snippet of my gun barrel at the start of the trailer. Its an instant Id that this is indeed a trailer for a Bond film. I think this is my most successful scene. The materials and whole movement of the camera and gun barrel looks really good. The model is solid and looks really good. I would definitely try to make a convincing blood drip if i could do it all again, but it was just one thing i had to sacrifice as time was ticking.

My second scene is with Oddjob  'stalking' Bond. I used my hand and gun models in this scene. I could not really get to grips with using the bone tool so i had to reposition my hand by just moving around planes and vertexes. In the end it did not make too much difference to the quality of the model and also the gun pretty much covers the hand so any imperfections can't be seen anyway. One thing i wish i could have done was actually model Oddjob with a biped and actually have him walking but i kept having trouble using the bidped. Everything i tried to rotate the model all the bones would just crumple and the model would be ruined and i had no idea of how to fix it. So in the end i had to just find an alternative and use camera panning to hide Oddjob moving closer to Bond. I don't think it looks too bad as it is but the addition of a biped could improve it. I think the environment looks good. Its not the best environment i could have made but i think with my limited skills it came out OK. The last scene is set in Goldfinger's Lair. Its one of the scenes everybody knows about if you ask them about James Bond so i had to put it in the trailer. I think the lighting sets a good atmosphere for the scene and I'm pleased with how the laser came out in the end, it was always one of my favorite models i made as it was the first time i really felt like i made some progress with the module.

I chose to just use the standard James Bond theme for the soundtrack as its just a classic theme and identifies it as a James Bond trailer. I wasn't going to add any other sound but i decided i should add the gunshot sound in the last part of the gun barrel scene because otherwise it would not have made much sense. The sound just improves the scene so I'm glad i did add it.

Overall i am pleased with the trailer i produced based on the fact i had never done any 3D modeling before or anything similar. Obviously i would've loved to have made an amazing action packed trailer so in that sense i am disappointed that i could not have learnt more to make it better. I enjoyed this module. Being able to come out with a final product is very satisfying and sort of makes you want to improve on what you have done. But sadly as we all have deadlines i had to draw a line under it and eventually convince myself it was good enough.

Scene 2

This is the scene from the film when Bond is captured by Goldfinger and is faced with being cut in half by a laser. The camera starts off with the front view then slowly pans out and to the left so you can see the full length James Bond. The camera then zooms into the laser to give a good transition. I added smoke to the laser so its more obvious its moving and to just make it look better. The omni light in the middle of the scene creates a dark atmosphere which i think looks pretty good.

Scene 1

This is the first scene on my animation. Its a 10 second clip which includes the dirt environment inside the sphere. Its an outside scene with James bond in first person view and also Oddjob. Bond spots oddjob, the camera pans to the left to make it seem like Bond is looking around. When it pans back to the center Oddjob has moved closer. He then looks to the right and when he turns back Oddjob has moved closer and has lost his hat. After a couple of seconds the hat comes down and covers the camera. In Goldfinger Oddjob throws his hat as a weapon and i wanted to add that into my tralier. I think the fact it comes at the camera gives a good effect of it seeming like it has hit Bond and also it creates a nice transition.

Gunbarrel scene movie

This is the final movie product of my gun barrel scene. The camera pans down the gun barrel and (when i have added the sound) a gun shot will be heard which is when the barrel sways from side to side and eventually drops.
Its a 10 second clip that i will use at the beginning and end of my full trailer. I want to use the the first couple of seconds at the start of my trailer and a quick intro then the rest of the clip to conclude the trailer.

Do you smell what the rock is cookin'?

I'm adding this model in and giving it its own post because i was really happy with how it came out! Its a simple rock that i put into my oddjob scene environment. I started with a box, used a spherify modifier on it then used turbosmooth and put the iterations to 4. I then used two displace modifiers. On the first displace modifier i used a Cellular map and on the second i used a noise map. With the cellular map you can change the cell colour to add texture to the rock. I set the displace strength to 4. The noise map added even more texture. I changed the size on the material editor to 25 and changed the noise type to fractural. This gave a more jagged edge to the rock. Finally i used a melt modifier which just melts the textured sphere down giving it a smooth bottom edge.

Oddjob scene environment

For this scene i wanted an outside setting with oddjob coming towards James bond and then it would end with oddjob throwing his hat at bond and covering the camera. I wanted just a simple landscape. I started by making the floor which is just a plane with a bitmap material on it to make it look like dirt path by a road. For the sky background i used a sphere cut in half and place it over the scene so everything is inside the sphere. I used the hemisphere tool to make the half sphere. I then used the normal modifier and flipped the normals so the colour would appear on the inside which is what the camera would see. I added a UVW mapping modifier and set it to spherical so the colour would be smooth all the way around.

Modeling the head

I thought the head was the most challenging model i had to make. I didn't know where to start or how i was going to make all the features. But in the end i sat down and found that i actually quite enjoyed modeling it and it wasn't as difficult as i first anticipated. So i started with a regular box and used turbosmooth on it straight away. I used 1 iteration so it wasnt a perfect sphere. Then i just resized to it was roughly the shape of a head.

Then the rest of the modeling was extruding or moving planes around and creating new edges to model the face with. For the eye socket i used an inset on the planes then moved them back into the head. I created another inset and then extruded back out for the eyes. The face looks kind of cartoony but i like the way it turned out and for a first timer at modeling i don't think its too bad!

i used the same technique of giving certain planes different id's if i wanted different colours and i used the multi/sub object material.

Modelling a person

This was the model i was most dreading to do. At first i tried to use a reference of a person from the front and side. This did not go so well, it was difficult to get the dimensions right and it went horribly wrong.
So i started again. I found another technique of modelling a person in an online tutorial. I started with a box and then cut it in half. I used the symmetry modifier on the box so both sides would come out identical. This meant i only had to model 1 half on the body.

Then it was a basic extrude and moving vertexes to where i wanted them. I left out the head as i thought it would be easier to model that separately and attach it later on. I then used a subdivide modifier to give the model more planes and edges so when the turbo smooth was added it would give a smoother and more rounded output. It also gave more vertexes to edit to give a better model.

To make the suite i gave each area i wanted a different colour a separate ID. I then used a multi/sub object material to select which colours i wanted on the certain Id's.

Laser and table

Along with the laser i needed to make a table for James bond to be laying on. I made just a simple table with a rectangle and the wood material. I wanted it to look how it does in the film so i made the base a curve and standing on a raised platform. I use the arc spline for the curve and extrude it out.

Lab Environment

For the scene with the laser beam i made a simple 3 walled structure. To match the scene in the film the walls and floor have a laminate wood material.

Inside the lab will be the laser, james bond on the lasers table and goldfinger standing over him. This is how the scene looks with the laser in there aswell.

Gun

I made the gun James Bond uses in Goldfinger. It was quite easy to make. I used a box and extruded it a few times for most of the gun, except for the trigger and trigger gaurd. For the trigger and the guard i used the line too to draw it and increased the length and width to give the dimensions i needed. I used the boolean tool to make a whole in the barrel and also through a cylinder to make the hammer.

Laser pewpew

One of the most memorable and iconic scenes from 'Goldfinger' is the scene when James Bond is captured and has to escape from being cut in half by a laser. One of the models i have made is of the laser from this scene. I basically just started with a cylinder and extruded all the way down and beveled in as the laser tube gets narrower. For the swirl inside the laser i used the helix tool on splines and just cloned one and attached it to make a proper spiral. I put luminosity on the spiral and the laser to make them bright and also reflect off the glass on the laser. It took a while to figure out all the materials and why certain things weren't doing what they were suppose to. I used glass for certain sections of the laser but for some reason it wasn't being see-through and wasn't reflecting anything. After a lot of confusion as to what i had actually done it just turned out i had used the wrong material! Raytrace was the way to go apparently. Noted for future reference...

A couple of details still need to be added, but this is how it looks so far.

Oddjobs hat

So I've decided to do my trailer for the film 'Goldfinger'. One of the main characters of this particular film is Oddjob and his hat. I have made just a simple model of his hat and I have also made a hand that will be shown to throw the hat in the trailer.

This is the hand in the modelling process. I need to smooth it over and finish it completely but this is how it looks so far. I started of with a a simple square and extruded. I moved the vertex's to make the hand look rounder. To make the knuckles and joints on the fingers i beveled out the polygons slightly. I added a skin material to the hand and ,made a darker skin material for the finger nails.

First attempts at 3D max...

So first we to make a castle. Didn't quite finish my castle, but it ended up as an Alice in wonderland Esq castle with teapots. Added some windows and a door, nothing spectacular...

The next thing to try and make was a snowman which turned out slightly more successful...

The final task was to create a bowl of fruit, I made some apples, grapes, oranges and cherries. I did attempt to make a banana but it went horribly wrong...
